How to get rid of old appliances in Richmond

The short answer

Every one of those includes the carry from any floor and disposal. The visit minimum is $75. There is no stair charge, no basement charge and no refrigerant fee.

Refrigerant is handled, not surcharged

Anything that cools — a fridge, a freezer, a window or portable air conditioner, an outdoor condenser or heat pump — contains refrigerant, and federal rules require that refrigerant to be recovered by a certified technician before the unit is scrapped. It cannot legally be vented, and a reputable disposal chain does not cut corners on it.

That is exactly why so many free and informal routes quietly decline refrigeration. A scrapper cruising a Northside alley is not set up for refrigerant recovery. A general drop-off may accept a dryer and refuse a fridge for the same reason.

On our side it is simply part of the job. A refrigerator is $164 and a mini fridge is $115, and the refrigerant handling is inside that number. There is no separate fee, no environmental surcharge and no line item added at the end. If you have been quoted a refrigerant charge elsewhere, that is a different pricing model, not a rule of physics.

The retailer haul-away only exists on delivery day

This is the option most worth using and the one most often missed.

When a new appliance is delivered, most retailers will remove the old one — but the offer is tied to that delivery visit. It usually applies only to the same category of appliance, only if the old unit is already disconnected, and only if it is accessible when the crew arrives. Delivery crews work to a schedule and a long stair carry can turn into a polite refusal.

Two Richmond-specific ways this goes wrong. In a Fan or Museum District upper-floor flat, the old fridge has to come down a staircase with a landing turn, which is more than a delivery slot allows for. And in a Northside or Ginter Park basement, a water heater or chest freezer has to come up an interior stair or out through a bulkhead, which the installer is not there to do.

Once delivery day passes, that route has closed. The old unit is now in your garage, and you are choosing between a scrapper, your county program, or a booked pickup.

Disconnect it properly first

Do these before removal day, not while the crew is standing there.

• Fridges and freezers. Unplug and let them defrost overnight with the door ajar and a towel down. A unit that is still melting will drip down a staircase all the way out, and in a Fan rowhouse that means onto original heart pine treads.
• Washers. Shut off the hot and cold valves, disconnect the hoses, and drain them into a bucket. There is always more water in them than you expect.
• Dishwashers. Water supply off, drain line disconnected, and the electrical isolated. Built-in units also need unfastening from the countertop and cabinet.
• Electric ranges. Unplug at the 240-volt outlet, or have the circuit isolated if it is hard-wired.
• Gas ranges and gas water heaters. Have these disconnected and capped by someone qualified. This is not a DIY step and it is the one to take seriously.
• Tank water heaters. Shut off supply and fuel or power, then drain fully. A full tank is enormously heavier and is a genuine injury risk on a basement stair.

Where Richmond appliances actually sit

Second-floor Fan and Museum District kitchens. Rowhouses cut into flats put full kitchens upstairs. A fridge comes down on a stair dolly with two people and, frequently, its doors off to clear the landing. Same $164.

Northside and Ginter Park basements. The graveyard of Richmond appliances — a second fridge, a chest freezer, and the water heater that was replaced two years ago and never carried out. Bulkhead exits are better than interior stairs and it is worth saying which you have.

Church Hill and Union Hill. Raised basements mean a long exterior flight down to the sidewalk even from a ground-floor kitchen.

Scott's Addition lofts. Freight elevator, booked with building management, and usually the fastest job of the lot once the slot is confirmed.

Short Pump, Glen Allen, Midlothian. Garage, roll-up door, driveway. Twenty minutes.

• Northside kitchen renovation: refrigerator $164 + electric range $134 + dishwasher $109 + microwave $30. The addition: $164 + $134 + $109 + $30 = $437. A half truck is $431, so the ladder edges it.
• Laundry replaced in a Bon Air ranch: washer $133 + dryer $128. The addition: $133 + $128 = $261.
• Fan flat, stacked unit swapped out: washer/dryer combo (stacked) $189 + microwave $30. The addition: $189 + $30 = $219.
• West End basement and utility clear: chest freezer $146 + water heater $131 + mini fridge $115 + dehumidifier $77. The addition: $146 + $131 + $115 + $77 = $469. A half truck is $431.
• Church Hill whole-kitchen gut: refrigerator (French door) $183 + gas range $137 + dishwasher $109 + laminate countertop, two sections at $56 each = $112. The addition: $183 + $137 + $109 + $112 = $541. A five-eighths truck is $513.

Appliances are dense and do not fill much truck space, so item pricing often wins on small appliance jobs and the ladder takes over once a renovation's cabinets and debris are added.

The other routes, briefly and honestly

Scrap collectors. Real, free, and fine for metal-heavy units at a curb — washers, dryers, ranges, water heaters. They choose what is worth taking, they set the schedule, they will not come inside, and refrigeration is generally not something they are equipped for.

Municipal collection. Richmond city, Henrico and Chesterfield each run their own arrangements, with their own rules on appliances and on units containing refrigerant. Check your own jurisdiction's current page. Whatever the rules, it is curbside — which does not help if the appliance is in a basement or a second-floor kitchen.

Doing it yourself. Possible with an appliance dolly, straps and an experienced second person. A full-size fridge is manageable for two on the level and genuinely dangerous for one on stairs, because the weight is high and it shifts.
