Local legend says Colonial Heights got its name when a British soldier spotted Lafayette’s artillery “up on the Heights” in May 1781. It became a town in 1926 and an independent city in 1948, and today has about 18,170 residents.
Southpark Mall was rebuilt after the 1993 F4 tornado. Around it, houses from the 1920s through the ’80s make up most of the city, and Colonial Heights runs its own trash program.
