The Fan District

Couch Removal in
The Fan District

In the Fan the couch is never by the door — it's up a third-floor walk-up or down in an English-basement apartment, on a block with no driveway. So we carry it from the room, not the curb: up the exterior basement stairs or down from an upper floor and out to the truck on the street, for a flat $126 quoted from a photo. Sleepers, recliners and sectionals too. No stair surcharge, no VA sales tax.

How couch removal works in the Fan

1 · Send a photo

Snap the couch or sectional and tell us the floor and access — English basement, second floor, third-floor walk-up. Exact flat price back in seconds, no in-home estimate.

2 · Pick a time

Choose a window — same-day is often open on Fan blocks, and we book ahead through the busy VCU May move-out. We sort the on-street parking on your street.

3 · We carry it out

A vetted, insured hauler brings the couch up the basement stairs or down from the walk-up and out to the truck, then donates or recycles it. You never touch it.

How much does couch removal cost in the Fan?

Flat and photo-quoted before anyone drives over — the carry-out and disposal are already in the number, whether the sofa is coming up from a basement unit or down three flights. For context, national cost guides put a traditional full-service couch removal at roughly $150–$400+ after a minimum and an in-home estimate visit; curbside services quote less but leave you to wrestle it out to the street. Ours is a flat $126, photo-quoted, and we do the stairs.

Does the City of Richmond pick up couches in the Fan?

Technically yes — but the way the Fan is built turns "technically" into "not really." The City's free Bulk & Brush program will take a couch, and it comes with three catches: it's curbside-only, it runs biweekly on your recycling week (a sofa can sit on the sidewalk up to two weeks), and you have to get it out to the curb yourself. You schedule it at 3-1-1 (804-646-7000) or DPW 804-646-6430 and set it by the trash cans the night before.

Here's where it falls apart in the Fan. There's no driveway and the couch is usually stranded — up a narrow third-floor staircase or down in an English-basement apartment reached by exterior steps. "Just drag it to the curb" is precisely the part that's impossible to do solo. That's the job we take: we come same-day, carry the couch up (or down) the stairs and out to the truck on the street, and haul it in one trip — no two-week curb wait and no wrestling it down alone. (The City also runs seasonal Neighborhood Cleanup Saturdays through the warmer months, but they rotate by zone and still leave the lifting to you.)

What we take

  • Sofas & couches — standard, mid-century, oversized; fabric or leather, any condition.
  • Sectionals — 2, 3 and 4-piece, split on site to clear a tight rowhouse door, priced as one flat number.
  • Sleeper sofas & futons — heavy pull-out frames included, no oversized upcharge.
  • Loveseats, recliners & armchairs — a single piece or the whole set.
  • Whole living rooms — couch, chairs, coffee table and the rest, priced together from one photo.

What happens to your couch after pickup

A sofa in good shape goes to donation — Fan-area partners like Diversity Thrift, Habitat for Humanity ReStore and Goodwill of Central & Coastal Virginia — so a usable couch furnishes another Richmond home instead of a landfill. What's past saving is broken down so the wood frame, metal springs and recyclable materials are routed properly and only the true remainder is disposed. Disposal is already in your flat price; there's no separate dump fee and no VA sales tax on top.

English basements, walk-ups & narrow Fan streets

Most Fan couch jobs are defined by the stairs and the street. It's a third-floor walk-up on Grove or Grace with a tight turning staircase, an English-basement garden apartment on Floyd or Stuart where the sofa has to come up the exterior steps, a rowhouse with no rear alley and on-street parking only, or a sectional that has to come apart to clear the original doorway. This is exactly where a curbside service — and the City's Bulk & Brush — leaves you stuck. We do the part they skip: our crew carries the couch out of the room, works the walk-up or the basement stairs, sorts the tight parking on a narrow Fan block (a few of which are residential-permit zones), and splits the sectional if the door demands it. The Fan sits in a Commission of Architectural Review historic district, so the crew is also careful with original floors, plaster and front steps. Access handled, price flat.

When Fan neighbors call us for couch removal

  • Upgrading the living room — a new sectional's arriving and the old couch has to be gone the same day.
  • VCU move-out — a student flat in the east Fan cleared in May, sofa and futon included.
  • Lease turnover — a landlord emptying a Fan rental of the last tenant's couch before the next move-in.
  • Downsizing a rowhouse — a Fan owner clearing a room of aging furniture room by room.
  • Sectional that won't fit — bought big, and it doesn't clear the rowhouse doorway or the basement stairs.

Why the Fan chooses JunkRabbit for couch removal

  • Flat price from a photo — the number you see is the number you pay; no in-home estimate, no VA sales tax.
  • We carry it from the room — full-service, not curbside; up the basement stairs or down the walk-up, you lift nothing.
  • Fan access handled — English-basement steps, tight staircases, on-street parking and sectional splits.
  • Same-day when a slot's open, donation and recycling included.

— Rachel H., The Fan
★★★★★

"Third-floor walk-up on Grove, new couch coming, old one had to go. They quoted $126 off my photo, found parking on a packed block, and had the old sofa down and gone in twenty minutes. Exactly what they said."

— Tyler M., The Fan
★★★★★

"City bulk pickup was two weeks out and I could not get a sectional down my rowhouse stairs alone. JunkRabbit split it, carried it out, flat price, donated the good half. Should've called them first."
