What "English basement" means in Richmond — and why the carry is the job

If you rent near VCU's Monroe Park campus, you already know the term. An English basement is a garden or ground-floor apartment carved into the lower level of a Fan or Church Hill rowhouse, with its own private entrance reached by a short flight of exterior stairs — a few steps down from the sidewalk to the door. Richmond uses the phrase constantly; it's how these units are listed and how tenants describe them. They're affordable, they're everywhere in the historic districts, and they turn over fast because so many are student and young-professional rentals.

Here's the wrinkle that makes furniture removal from one genuinely hard: everything has to come up and out the way it came in — up the narrow exterior basement stairs to the sidewalk, on a no-driveway, on-street-parking-only block, to a truck at the curb. (And when the unit's on an upper floor instead, it's the reverse — down from the second or third floor and out front.) That up-the-stairs carry is exactly what we're set up to do, and it's already baked into the flat price. No stair fee, no below-grade access fee, no surcharge of any kind.

How it works

  1. Send a photo. Show us the couch, mattress or the whole unit, and tell us it's an English basement (or which floor it's on). No walkthrough, no waiting on an estimator.
  2. Get an exact flat price. It covers the up-the-stairs carry, the drive and the disposal — the whole number, with no VA sales tax.
  3. We carry it up and out. An insured crew parks as close as the block allows, carries it up the garden-apartment stairs, and hauls it — same-day when a slot's open. You don't lift a thing.

English-basement pricing

Flat, photo-quoted before we arrive. Individual pieces price on their own; a whole move-out prices as truck-fill. The exterior-stairs carry is always included.

Item / volumeFlat price
Sofa / couch$126
Loveseat$119
Futon$111
Queen mattress$103
Twin mattress$82
Mini-fridge$115
Dresser$126
Desk$83
Truck-fill (1/4)$241
Truck-fill (1/2)$431
Truck-fill (full)$732

$75 minimum. A single small item is priced up to the $75 minimum; pair it with anything and it's covered. The move-out standby — couch, mattress and mini-fridge — adds up per piece and roommates often split it. Disposal included. No stair surcharge. No Virginia sales tax on the service.

The classic English-basement move-out load

Nine times out of ten, clearing one of these units is the same short list — the stuff that came furnished-cheap and isn't worth moving to the next place. We take all of it in one trip:

  • The couch or futon — usually the piece that barely made it down the stairs in the first place.
  • Mattress and box spring — twin, full or queen, carried up and out, recycled where we can.
  • The mini-fridge — and any microwave, window AC or space heater that came with the place.
  • Cheap furniture — the hand-me-down dresser, the flat-pack desk, the bookshelf, the papasan chair.
  • Whole-unit clear-out — everything, priced as truck-fill, so the apartment's empty by the lease date.

The City's free Bulk & Brush pickup (call 804-646-6430 or 3-1-1) is real and worth it — if you can get the couch up the outside stairs and to the curb yourself and can wait for your biweekly collection day. When you can't, or the lease is up before then, that's the flat-price carry we do for you.

Why VCU renters use us

The Fan, Oregon Hill and the Monroe Park edge are packed with student and young-professional rentals, and the calendar is brutal: the 9-month VCU housing contract ends in early May, off-campus leases turn over from May through August, and everybody's clearing out the same week. You're juggling a security deposit, a U-Haul, and a couch that will not go back up — or rather down — the basement stairs. We solve exactly that piece: a flat price you can see before you book, a same-day carry up the exterior stairs, and an easy way to split the cost with roommates. Usable furniture gets donated where it can, so it doesn't just hit the landfill on the way out.

Where it goes after pickup

Move-out furniture is often barely used, so we keep what we can out of the landfill. Usable couches, dressers and desks are routed to Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Diversity Thrift, or Goodwill of Central & Coastal Virginia; mattresses go to recycling where available; metal is scrapped; and any TV, monitor or laptop — which Virginia bans from landfills — is routed to CVWMA and e-waste recyclers. Real routing, no invented diversion stats.
