Hot Tub & Spa Removal in
Richmond
The old hot tub nobody's used in three years, sitting on the deck or the back patio, too big to move and definitely not going to the curb — we cut it apart in place, carry the pieces out through the gate or down the deck stairs, and haul it, frame and metal recycled. One flat price from a photo, and no Virginia sales tax on the service.

A hot tub isn't a curbside job — it's a demolition
Getting rid of a hot tub is nothing like setting a couch at the curb. A filled tub weighs thousands of pounds; even drained, a shell is a rigid, awkward slab wrapped in cabinetry, insulation, a pump, and a tangle of plumbing. It usually sits on a raised deck, a paver patio, or in a fenced backyard with a narrow gate, so it physically can't be rolled out in one piece. The only real way to remove it is to cut it apart on site and carry the sections out — and that's exactly the job we do. We bring the tools, break the tub down where it sits, walk the pieces to the truck, and haul it, with the metal frame and components recycled. One flat number, quoted from a photo before we roll.
We take the whole family of backyard water features: hot tubs and spas, larger swim spas, cold plunge tubs, and saunas — plus the old cover, steps, and any decking debris that comes with it. Send a photo of the tub and the path out to the street, and the flat price already accounts for the disassembly and the access.
How it works in Richmond
- Send a photo. Snap the tub and the route to the street — the gate, the deck stairs, the side yard. That's what sets the price.
- Get an exact flat price. The number covers the cut-apart, the carry, the drive and the disposal — the whole price, no VA sales tax.
- We demo it and haul it. An insured crew shows up, cuts the tub down to haulable pieces on site, carries it all out, and recycles the frame. You don't lift a thing.
How much does hot tub removal cost in Richmond?
Flat rate, photo-quoted before anyone shows up. The disassembly, the carry off the deck, and the disposal are all in the number.
| Item | Flat price |
|---|---|
| Hot tub / spa | $390 |
| Cold plunge tub | $271 |
| Sauna | $293 |
$75 minimum (a hot tub is well above it). A standard hot tub is $390 flat; a larger swim spa or a job with unusually tight access is photo-quoted from the same starting point. Disassembly, carry-out, metal recycling and disposal included. No VA sales tax on the service.
For context, national cost guides from Angi and HomeGuide put professional hot tub removal at roughly $300–$700, averaging around $350–$500, with more for a crane or very tight access. Our flat photo price includes the on-site cut-apart and the haul — no hourly labor, no surprise disassembly fee.
Three ways to get rid of a hot tub in Richmond
| Option | Cost | Effort | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| City Bulk & Brush (DPW) | — | — | Won't take it; not an accepted bulk item |
| DIY demolition | Tool + dump fees | A weekend of sawing | Reciprocating saw, a truck, and the disposal run |
| JunkRabbit | Flat $390, from a photo | None — we do it all | Cut apart, carried out, recycled |
DIY is possible if you own a reciprocating saw, a truck, and a free Saturday — plan for the dump fees and the disposal run. When you'd rather it just be gone, that's the flat-price demo-and-haul.
Does the City of Richmond take a hot tub?
No — and this is the part that surprises people. The City of Richmond's free Bulk & Brush program (DPW, 804-646-6430 or 3-1-1 / 804-646-7000) collects bulky furniture and cut-and-bundled yard debris curbside on your recycling week, with a rough 48-inch size guideline. A hot tub is far over that, it can't be dragged intact from a backyard deck to the curb, and it simply isn't an accepted bulk item. The CVWMA convenience centers (East Richmond Road, 3800 East Richmond Rd; Southside Transfer Station, 3520 North Hopkins Rd) take a lot from city residents, but you'd still have to demolish the tub yourself, load the pieces, and haul them there.
So a hot tub is genuinely one of the few things there's no free municipal path for — it requires disassembly and haul-away, full stop. That's the whole reason this is a specialty job, and it's the one we quote flat and finish in a single visit.
Decks, gates & backyard access
The hardest part of a hot tub removal is rarely the tub itself — it's the path out. Around Richmond and the West End that usually means one of a few things: a tub built into or sitting on a raised deck that has to come down a set of stairs, a paver patio behind a narrow fence gate, or a spa tucked along the side of the house with tight clearance. We plan the cut around the access — sectioning the shell so the pieces fit through the gate or down the steps — and we protect the deck boards and pavers on the way out. In older City backyards with no rear vehicle access, we carry the pieces around to a truck on the street. The access is designed into the flat price, not billed as an add-on.
What we take
- Hot tubs & spas — acrylic and roto-mold shells, cut apart on site.
- Swim spas & larger units — bigger footprints, sectioned and hauled.
- Cold plunge tubs — the newer backyard cold-therapy setups.
- Saunas — freestanding and barrel saunas, broken down and carried out.
- Covers, steps & deck debris — the old cover, surround and steps that go with it.
What happens to your hot tub after pickup
A hot tub is a mix of acrylic or plastic shell, foam insulation, and a real amount of metal — the frame, the pump, the heater and the fittings. We separate what's recyclable and route the metal to scrap recycling, disposing of the rest responsibly at a proper facility. There's no honest "donation" path for a two-decade-old spa, so we don't pretend there is; the win is that the frame and components get recycled rather than everything going straight to a landfill. It's all covered by the flat price.
When you need hot tub removal
- It's dead or leaking — the pump quit, the shell cracked, and it's just taking up the deck.
- Selling the house — a non-working tub is a liability on a listing; clear it before you go to market.
- Deck or patio remodel — the old tub has to come out before the new build starts.
- Bought a home with an unwanted tub — the previous owner left a spa you'll never use.
- Reclaiming the backyard — you want the deck or patio space back.
Why Richmond chooses JunkRabbit for hot tubs
- We do the demolition. Cut apart on site so it fits through your gate or down the deck stairs — no DIY sawing.

- Access planned in. Raised deck, narrow gate, tight side yard — that's the job, not an upcharge.
- Frame recycled. The metal goes to scrap, the rest disposed of responsibly.
- No Virginia sales tax, deck and pavers protected on the way out.
What Richmond customers say

"We bought a house in Midlothian with a dead spa on the patio behind a narrow gate. Figured it'd be a nightmare. They sectioned it, walked it out, done in an afternoon. No sales tax, no surprises."
"Remodeling the deck in Bon Air and the old hot tub had to go first. Flat quote from a photo, cut apart and hauled, deck boards protected the whole way. Couldn't have done it myself."
